在宋末（13世纪晚期）以后，绘画理论中的雄辩言辞，以及用于评价画家成就的正面术语，大部分都适用于业余爱好者，而没有发展起真正相应评价专业画家的方法。
至少在有教养的中国人中间，存在着一种坚决主张，认为在所有体面的事务范围内，必须区分开业余兴趣和职业化行为，并且绝对地偏好前者。隐藏在这一“业余理想”背后的论点是，业余受好者经过修养的心性，会不期然地或根据儒家的正确原则做出超出专门技能之上的决定，同时还会免受物质利益低级动机的干扰。
