作者简介
埃德加•斯诺，美国著名记者。他于1928年来华，曾任欧美几家报社驻华记者、通讯员。1933年4月到1935年6月，斯诺同时兼任北平燕京大学新闻系讲师。1936年6月斯诺访问陕甘宁边区，写了大量通讯报道，成为第一个采访红区的西方记者。
董乐山，翻译家，作家。生于浙江省宁波市。1946年冬毕业于上海圣约翰大学英国文学系。译作《第三帝国的兴亡》（合译）、《一九八四》《西方人文主义的传统》《红星照耀中国》等均有广泛影响。

我读了《御批通鉴辑览》以后，得出结论，还不如自学更好。我在校六个月就退学了，订了一个自修计划，每天到湖南省立图书馆去看书。我非常认真地执行，持之以恒。我这样度过的半年时间，我认为对我极有价值。每天早晨图书馆一开门我就进去。中午只停下来买两块米糕吃。这就是我每天的午饭。我天天在图书馆读到关门才出来。
虽然他们几乎全体都遭遇过人生的悲剧，但是他们都没有太悲伤，也许是因为年纪太轻的缘故。在我看来，他们相当快活，也许是我所看到过的第一批真正感到快活的中国无产者。在中国，消极满足是普遍的现象，但是快活这种比较高一级的感情，却的确是罕见的，这意味着对于生存有着一种自信的感觉。
