董乐山,翻译家,作家。生于浙江省宁波市。1946年冬毕业于上海圣约翰大学英国文学系。译作《第三帝国的兴亡》(合译)、《一九八四》《西方人文主义的传统》《红星照耀中国》等均有广泛影响。

我读了《御批通鉴辑览》以后,得出结论,还不如自学更好。我在校六个月就退学了,订了一个自修计划,每天到湖南省立图书馆去看书。我非常认真地执行,持之以恒。我这样度过的半年时间,我认为对我极有价值。每天早晨图书馆一开门我就进去。中午只停下来买两块米糕吃。这就是我每天的午饭。我天天在图书馆读到关门才出来。
虽然他们几乎全体都遭遇过人生的悲剧,但是他们都没有太悲伤,也许是因为年纪太轻的缘故。在我看来,他们相当快活,也许是我所看到过的第一批真正感到快活的中国无产者。在中国,消极满足是普遍的现象,但是快活这种比较高一级的感情,却的确是罕见的,这意味着对于生存有着一种自信的感觉。
