劳伦斯·布洛克生于1938年，在上世纪50年代开始写小说。布洛克最早出版的小说《睡不着觉的密探》（1966年）主角是一位名叫伊凡·谭纳的密探，因为在朝鲜战争中脑部受伤，再也无法睡眠，这个角色在之后的系列中不断地出现，最新的是1998年的《冰上的谭纳》。布洛克还有其他受欢迎的系列，比如“杀手凯勒”系列和以纽约二手书商兼盗贼罗登巴尔为主角的“雅贼”系列。
