and pictorial representations, The Double Screen shows how the
collaboration and tension between material form and image gives life to
a painting. A Chinese painting is often reduced to the image it bears;
its material form is dismissed; its intimate connection with social
activities and cultural conventions neglected.
A screen occupies a space and divides it, supplies an ideal surface for
painting, and has been a favorite pictorial image in Chinese art since
antiquity. Wu Hung undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the screen,
which can be an object, an art medium, a pictorial motif, or all three
at once. With its diverse roles, the screen has provided Chinese
painters with endless opportunities to reinvent their art.

作者简介
巫鸿（Wu Hung）早年任职于故宫博物院书画组、金石组，获中央美术学院美术史系硕士。1987年获哈佛大学美术史与人类学双重博士学位，后在该校美术史系任教，1994年获终身教授职位。同年受聘主持芝加哥大学亚洲艺术的教学、研究项目，执“斯德本特殊贡献教授”讲席，2002年建立东亚艺术研究中心并任主任。
其著作《武梁祠：中国古代画像艺术的思想性》获1989年全美亚洲学年会最佳著作奖（李文森奖）；《中国古代美术和建筑中的纪念碑性》获评1996年杰出学术出版物，被列为20世纪90年代最有意义的艺术学著作之一；《重屏：中国绘画中的媒介与表现》获全美最佳美术史著作提名。参与编写《中国绘画三千年》（1997）、《剑桥中国先秦史》（1999）等。多次回国客座讲学，发起“汉唐之间”中国古代美术史、考古学研究系列国际讨论会，并主编三册论文集。
近年致力于中国现当代艺术的研究与国际交流。策划展览《瞬间：90年代末的中国实验艺术》（1998）、《在中国展览实验艺术》（2000）、《重新解读：中国实验展览艺术十年（1990-2000）——首届广州当代艺术三年展》（2004）和《“美”的协商》（2005）等，并编撰有关专著。所培养的学生现在美国各知名学府执中国美术史教席。

题跋与绘画之间的一种复杂关系。一方面，题跋是对画面的回应，从而承认了画作是第一位的；另一方面，题跋不可避免地改变了画作的内容以及人们对它的理解，从而把自身凌驾于画作之上。对此后的中国绘画传统来说，这一悖论极富代表性，也至关重要。在中国绘画传统中，观赏者有权在一幅画上对“内部文本之圈”添砖加瓦，并因此而能够主动地去改变画作所呈现出来的景象。
屏风与书案的并置为我们解读这件画作提供了许多线索。书案与屏风构成了两组图像，可能突出了文人生活的两个主要方面：书籍和乐器暗示出他高雅的行为和情趣，田园景色和草堂则象征着他隐退山野的生活。
著名南宋学者、科学家沈括（1031-1095年）就曾认为那些“修身美髯，戴薄纱黑帽”的形象所表现的正是韩熙载，而且还指出当时人们往往把这些形象错认为其他历史人物。
一旦我们把《韩熙载夜宴图》看做一副手卷，我们会发现，这幅画是一幅独具特色的手卷结构的顶峰之作，在不断移动的画面上不时出现明确的次级边界。
