Quentin Tarantino was born in 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is the writer-director of nine feature films, the winner of two Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, and the author of the novel Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Cinema Speculation is his first work of nonfiction.

1975年上映的《大白鲨》， 可能算不上是有史以来最好的“ film”，但绝对是有史以来最好的“movie”。因为这部电影的掌舵人，有史以来第一次不是理查德·弗莱彻或杰克·斯迈特或迈克尔·安德森这类执行制片公司拍摄任务的导演，而是一位对这种电影情有独钟，并且为了能把脑海中的构想完整呈现出来而愿意倾其所有，为了电影而生的天才影人。
当年我还只是一个喜欢看电影、愿意花钱看任何电影的小孩子，以为他们就是些爱挖苦人的孙子。但现在长了些岁数，多了些阅历之后，我才意识到他们过得到底有多不快乐。看他们的影评，你会觉得这个人真是恨极了自己的生活，或者至少是恨极了自己的工作。
“那他们为什么要抢他的东西啊？”我问。她说：“因为这是喜剧，他们只是在取笑一些东西。”就在那一刻，我理解了讽刺的概念。
她说：“好吧，昆汀，我是觉得这电影太暴力了。倒不是说我有什么顾虑，但你肯定是看不懂里面那些情节的。那既然理解不了暴力发生的语境，那你看这部电影的时候，就等于是为了看暴力而看暴力。我不希望你这样。”有关暴力的讨论此后贯穿了我的一生，但我至今都没听过比这更明晰的阐释。
