The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries witnessed such fervent investigations of the natural world that the period has been called the 'Scientific Revolution.' 劳伦斯•普林西比 美国约翰斯•霍普金斯大学科学技术史系和化学系教授。主要研究早期化学史、炼金术史。由于对科学史研究的卓越贡献,被授予培根奖章。另著有《火中试验炼金术:斯塔基、玻意耳以及海尔蒙特派化学家的命运》(2002,与W.R.纽曼合著)、《雄心勃勃的炼金术士: 罗伯特•玻意耳和他的炼金术探索》(1998)。

序言作者

吴国盛 生于1964年。北京大学理学学士(1983)、哲学硕士(1986),中国社会科学院哲学博士(1998)。1997年获破格晋升,成为中国社会科学院最年轻的研究员,1999年回到北京大学哲学系任教。现任北京大学科学史与科学哲学研究中心主任。著有《科学的历程》《时间的观念》《希腊空间概念》《现代化之忧思》《反思科学》等。
