孔飞力(Philip Alden Kuhn), 美国著名汉学家。1933年9月9日出生于英国伦敦。1950年,毕业于美国华盛顿特区的威尔逊CWoodraw Wilson)高级中学,同年考入哈佛大学。1959年获得硕士学位。师从费正清教授(John Fairbank)、史华慈教授(Benjanmin Schwartz)学习中国历史。1964年获得了哈佛大学历史与远东语言的博士学位。历任哈佛大学费正清东亚研究中心主任等职。代表著作除本书外还有《叫魂:1768中国妖术大恐慌》(Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mas.,1990. 中译本由生活·读书·新知三联书店于1999年出版,陈兼、刘昶译)、《现代中国的起源》(Stanford University Press, Stanford, California, 2002. 目前未见汉译)等。
