莱斯利•波勒斯•哈特利（Leslie Poles Hartley，1895－1972），出生在英国剑桥郡威特里斯，就读于哈罗公学和牛津大学贝列尔学院。1923年起从事小说评论写作，为《旁观者》（Spectator）、《星期六评论》（Saturday Review）、《随笔》（Sketch）、《伦敦杂志》（London Magazine）、《时光》（Time and Tide）等期刊撰稿。1924年出版短篇小说集《恐怖之夜》（Night Fears）。1944年，他的第一部长篇小说《虾米和海葵》（The Shrimp and the Anemone）问世，这是一部三部曲的第一部，其后是《第六重天》（The Sixth Heaven，1946）和《尤斯塔斯和希尔达》（Eustace and Hilda，1947），最后一本获得了詹姆斯•泰勒•布莱克纪念奖（the James Tait Black Memorial Prize）。哈特利的其他小说包括《小船》（The Boat，1949）、《送信人》（The Go-Between，1953）、《受雇者》（The Hireling，1957）等。《送信人》于1954年获皇家文学会海尼曼基金会奖。1967年，哈特利出版文学评论集《小说家的责任》（The Novelist’s Responsibility）。他后期的作品包括《姐姐的守护者》（My Sister’s Keeper，1970）、《卡特里特太太之领受》（Mrs Carteret Receives，1971）以及《铠甲屋》（The Harness Room，1971）。
